Architecture and Mitigation

Approx. 36% of all emissions are from the use of buildings, particularly residential. Design rather than technological innovation is an important way of mitigating the causes of climate change and reducing CO2 emissions. The energy required over a building’s entire lifecycle adds a further 30% to its share of industrial emissions, to which we must add another 30% of transport-related emissions, one third of which is ascribable to the way cities are designed (not simply the fact that few of our cars are electric). Architectural design and urban planning may be the biggest causes of the environmental crisis by far, but they are also an area in which we can achieve meaningful mitigation.

Climate change and creativity

How can we deal with climate change? It will take a paradigm shift to find effective solutions capable of reversing the course taken by humanity since the industrial revolution and the consequent rise in global temperatures. In many cases, the legacy of modern architecture and planning has exacerbated critical global environmental conditions. How can we make this paradigm shift a reality? We must adopt a transdisciplinary, visionary, radical approach, innovatively drawing on the wealth of knowledge we already possess. To counter the now scientific certainty of climate change, its causes and effects, we must create a network, a backbone of creativity, through which to challenge the status quo and fuel the imagination of the next generations of architects.
