Architecture and Mitigation

Approx. 36% of all emissions are from the use of buildings, particularly residential. Design rather than technological innovation is an important way of mitigating the causes of climate change and reducing CO2 emissions.

The energy required over a building’s entire lifecycle adds a further 30% to its share of industrial emissions, to which we must add another 30% of transport-related emissions, one third of which is ascribable to the way cities are designed (not simply the fact that few of our cars are electric).

Architectural design and urban planning may be the biggest cause of the environmental crisis by far, but they are also an area in which we can achieve meaningful mitigation.
