Course Description
The course deals with architecture based on the fundamental concepts that guide Grafton Architects, an internationally renowned architecture studio based in Dublin, Ireland. Established in 1978 by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, the studio has become a benchmark on the contemporary architecture scene because of its ability to create innovative, functional spaces that elegantly integrate into their surroundings. Grafton Architects’ philosophy centers on creating spaces that promote learning, socializing, and environmental sustainability.
The practice approaches every project with the utmost attention to detail and the aim of creating quality spaces that respond to the needs of their clients and users. Over the years, Grafton Architects has received numerous accolades for its work, including the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture in 2020 and the European Union Award for Contemporary Architecture (Mies van der Rohe Award) in 2022. By examining the firm’s main completed and future projects, the course will offer insights into useful analytical tools developed by this successful studio.
